The communities of La Vernia and Corpus Christi, Texas, are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ava Wetzel, a 16-year-old student whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating car accident just before the beginning of the new school year.

According to authorities, Ava died in a single-vehicle rollover crash early Sunday morning on U.S. Highway 87 in La Vernia. The La Vernia Police Department reported that the crash occurred shortly before 4 a.m. after Ava’s vehicle left the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation. The vehicle reportedly struck the “Welcome to La Vernia” brick sign, overturned, and caught fire. Ava was the only person inside the vehicle.

Ava, originally from Corpus Christi, had recently moved to La Vernia and was preparing to begin a new chapter in her life. Instead of starting the school year with new experiences and friendships, her family, classmates, and community are now grieving the loss of a young woman whose future was filled with promise.
